The Importance of Community

The concept of community is something that we as coaches understand and value.
However, a great deal of our work is often focused on one individual. We tend to be working in our own spaces, often isolated from others. We often forget the importance of holding space for each other, and creating an IRL (In Real Time) connection with others. We often live our daily lives without connection.
We are all a part of natural communities--some are permanent, and some are fleeting. However, communities are rich in resources, support, and knowledge. They remind us that we are not alone in our journey and in our own unique struggles. Communities are where we gain connection, and where we find solace in the chaos of our lives. One of my most valuable communities is that of the GCA, and specifically the community that has been forged from attending the International Gay Coaches Conference for the past three years.
This community is comprised of men who have had similar experiences with not only being coaches, but share similar experiences of reaching a certain level of self-acceptance and self-awareness of the gay experience. I have taken on the task of being a committee co-chair for the conference this year. My goal is to assist the GCA in co-creating a conference in which I am beyond proud to be a part of. If you are interested in coming for the first time or returning to the conference after not attending for quite some time, please reach out to me with any questions or assistance you may need. I look forward to seeing you at the conference in April!
